In 16th-century France, people told the story of Isabelle, the daughter of a poor merchant who had loved a young nobleman for many years without hope of being loved in return. When he firmly rejected her affections, the heartbroken girl decided to take her own life.

In the attic of her family home, however, she found an old mirror set in a heavy golden frame. When she looked into its surface, she saw herself more beautiful than ever before. Then her reflection spoke and promised to grant all of her dreams, but at the cost of another person's suffering.

A few months later, Isabelle became one of the most admired women in the region. She was beautiful, confident, and married the nobleman who had once rejected her. Over time, however, people began to notice that the household servants were replaced with unusual frequency, while nearby villages increasingly mourned the disappearance of young women.

To preserve her youth and beauty, Isabelle offered more and more victims to the mirror. She never looked into another mirror again, and there was not a single one in her home. It was said that when she accidentally caught her reflection one day, she saw her true face—a visage stripped of dreams and consumed by evil.
