Penitent
Penitent
In medieval Europe, a monk from an order of ascetics pushed the practice of self-mortification beyond all reason. He fasted by day, scourged himself until he bled by night, and wore ever heavier chains upon his body. At first, his fellow brothers admired his devotion, but in time they came to believe he had descended into madness.

One night, a cold silver light filled the monastery. When the other monks rushed into his cell, they saw the penitent's wounds healing before their eyes as his chains fell onto the stone floor. He did not speak a single word. He simply rose, opened the door, and disappeared into the darkness.

Since then, stories have been told of a spectral penitent in a tattered habit, his body covered in silvery scars. He wanders lonely roads and ruined chapels, seeking out those who themselves yearn for suffering. To them, he promises purification through pain.

The people say, however, that the Penitent does not seek salvation. He seeks only those who are willing to suffer as he did.
