In a small village in southern Poland lived a gravedigger named Jan. He was a loner who spent nearly his entire life among the gravestones. The villagers claimed that he knew the names of every dead person in the cemetery and spoke to them more often than to the living.

One warm summer evening, a horrifying scream echoed across the graveyard. When people arrived, they found only a freshly dug grave and a shovel driven deep into the earth. Several days later, Jan's body was discovered, buried alive in his own grave.

From that day on, the gravedigger never truly left the cemetery. His gaunt figure has been seen wandering among the tombstones, and many have heard the sound of a shovel being dragged across the stone paths. They say that at night he opens old graves and moves the dead from one resting place to another, as though the dead never truly belonged to the earth that claimed them.
